Watching Over the City

A soldier is depicted as standing watch at the Johnstown Civil War Memorial on Union Place across from Union Hall Inn Restaurant in Johnstown between E. State and E.
Main Streets that was erected in 1910. The original inscription reads “IN MEMORY OF THE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS OF THE CIVIL WAR WHO FIGHTING NOT FOR THEMSELVES BUT FOR THE FUTURE GENERATIONS SAVED THE NATION”. There are additional memorial plaques that have been added for the Korean and Vietnam wars with names listed and the additional inscriptions: “LET NOT MEMORIES OF THESE MEN PERISH ELSE FREEDOM SHALL PERISH ALSO” and “FOR LIBERTY THEY GAVE THEIR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION, THE GIFT OF LIFE”.
